Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2200

Phone: 734 763-6940

Email address: brichard@umich.edu

Research Interests:

This laboratory studies the role that DNA methylation and chromatin structure play in regulating immune and cellular function, and how changes in chromatin structure contribute to the immune and other problems characterizing human lupus and aging. Current studies include analysis of methylation patterns by bisulfite sequencing, analysis of histone modifications by chromatin immunoprecipitation, detection of permissive configurations with DNaseI hypersensitivity assays, and identification of mechanisms regulating DNA methylation and chromatin structure.

Brief Biography

Bruce Richardson MD PhD is currently a Professor of Medicine at the University of Michigan and Chief of Rheumatology at the Ann Arbor VA hospital. He received his MD and PhD in Immunology from the University of Chicago , did postdoctoral training at UCSF, and has been on the faculty at the University of Michigan since 1982. His area of interest is the role that DNA methylation plays in regulating T cell gene expression, and how changes in T cell DNA methylation patterns contribute to autoimmunity and immune senescence. He has written more than 75 peer reviewed articles and 30 reviews primarily in the areas of DNA methylation, autoimmunity and aging. This work has been recognized by the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, which in 2000 presented him the Phillip Hench award for his work demonstrating that procainamide and hydralazine induce autoimmunity by inhibiting T cell DNA methylation. He has also been named Eminent Scientist and Outstanding Scholar of the Year 2001 by the International Research Promotion Council for his studies on DNA modification by the cell, and the role that abnormal methylation plays in disease development. . He is currently on the Board of Directors of the DNA Methylation Society, and co-editor of a Clinical Immunology issue dedicated to DNA Methylation in the Immune System . He has also been an invited speaker at 4 NIH workshops on the pathogenesis of autoimmunity, and on DNA methylation as it relates to disease states.
