Professor of Internal Medicine and Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine; Director, Geriatrics Center and Institute of Gerontology, University of Michigan

Campus Address:

Geriatrics Center

Research Interests

Dr. Halter's laboratory studies neuroendocrine regulation of metabolism in aging and in type 2 diabetes mellitus. These studies involve defining quantitative aspects of pancreatic beta cell function and insulin action in young controls and elderly patients with normal glucose metabolism, impaired carbohydrate tolerance, or overt type 2 diabetes. Related studies are investigating pancreatic islet adaptation to insulin resistance in human aging and hypertension by studying pancreatic beta cell function in relationship to measurement of insulin resistance.

Brief Biography

Dr. Halter is Professor of Internal Medicine and Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine, and Director of the Geriatrics Center at the University of Michigan Medical School, and Research Scientist at the University of Michigan 's Institute of Gerontology . After internal medicine residency, he completed fellowship training in metabolism, endocrinology and gerontology at the University of Washington , where he subsequently joined the faculty of the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine and established the Geriatrics Section at the Seattle VA Medical Center. He moved to his current position in 1984, and was the founding Director of the GRECC at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System in 1989. Dr. Halter's research interests include neuroendocrine regulation of metabolism in aging and in diabetes mellitus, and regulation of autonomic nervous system function. He is an author of over 200 research papers and book chapters, and is a Co-editor of the 5th edition of Principles of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology published by McGraw-Hill in 2003.

Dr. Halter is a past President (1998-99) and Chairman of the Board of Directors (1999-2000) of the American Geriatrics Society; he is a past Chair of the Clinical Medicine Section of the Gerontological Society of America, and served as Chair of its Publications Committee 2000-2002. He is a former Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, and is a member of several national organization advisory panels on aging and geriatrics research. He has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
