Dr. Verbrugge is Research Professor Emerita and Senior Distinguished Research Scientist Emerita at the University of Michigan. A social demographer, she has contributed to research, teaching, and mentoring in the fields of demography, medical sociology, gerontology, health survey research methods, and social epidemiology. Dr. Verbrugge's current research topics span empirical and theoretical issues in disability for midlife and older adults. Current research topics are trends in activities and disability among middle-aged and older adults; the twin issues of aging-with-disability and disability-with-aging; how functional limitations affect activities of older persons; and physical and social impacts of arthritis and other disabling conditions. Dr. Verbrugge is skilled in design and statistical analysis of health and social surveys. Honors and awards received include a Distinguished Switzer Fellowship from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and two Research Career Development Awards from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Verbrugge held visiting positions at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2004-2005 and 2006. Currently, she has research collaboration ties with faculty and graduate students at the Institute of Gerontology, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Malaysia.
