Medication/Alcohol Use and Abuse

The misuse of alcohol and medications can cost many older adults their independence. Geriatrics Center Social Work offers screening, consultation, referral and support to clients and families with questions about how alcohol and/or medications may be affecting their lives. A Geriatrics Center Social Worker can help with:

• Education about how alcohol and medications affect the aging body
• Advice about how to talk with an older adult about problems with the use of medications or alcohol.
• Screening to determine whether or not an older adult may have a problem with the use of medications or alcohol.
• Referral to local and national assessment and treatment facilities geared toward the special needs of older adults.
