Mild Memory Loss Programs
The activities offered in these programs range from education about living well with memory loss, learning coping strategies, topical discussions and exploring the expressive arts. Each of the mild memory loss programs provides members with an opportunity to meet with others and keep their mind and body active. All programs are held at the Turner Senior Resource Center.
Mind Works: Social Brain Games
This group is designed for adults who are concerned about their memory or those diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or early memory loss. Fun and relaxed, this is a non-competitive atmosphere where members work on a variety of games both individually and in small and large groups. Games and mental exercises are selected carefully to stimulate and build different areas of the brain. Optional home practice is offered. This program was established in 2006.
Coffeehouse Memory Loss Seminar
This education, support and discussion group meets once a week for those diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimerís disease and related dementias. Coffeehouse members share concerns; strategies for living well with memory loss and hear from experts in the field on a variety of topics related to brain health. This program provides an uplifting and supportive peer community for those who are interested in a whole brain approach to living with cognitive change. Stress management, well-being and camaraderie are the cornerstones of this long-standing community group, which was established in 1999.
This is a creative discussion, reminiscence and expressive arts program for individuals with mild to moderate memory loss. Wisdom Keepers meets weekly and is designed for people who are looking for a social experience and enjoy exploring long-term memories, as well as cultural outings. Each week has a theme, chosen by group members, where life is explored through all the senses and where interesting connections, reflections and discoveries are always made. This program was established in 2006.
Elderberry Club (Elder, barely)
The first of its kind in Michigan, and the only group in the country that we have heard about, designed exclusively for women with memory loss! This is a group of youthful women living with memory loss who come together each week for support, discussion, friendship, creative expression and education. The Elderberry Club is as lively and warm as the women involved. Since the programsí inception in 2011, the group members have had two art shows, published collective poetry, and were featured on a UM-podcast series for their work. They want to be heard and uplift other women who may be isolated and living with memory loss.
