Patient Information

Food allergies are one of many possible adverse reactions a person may have after eating a particular food. Symptoms of food allergies often begin just minutes to an hour after eating. Common symptoms include:

The most common foods to cause allergic reactions are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. Sesame is gaining importance as a food allergen.

At the University of Michigan our specially trained physicians, who are board-certified in Internal Medicine or Pediatrics and Allergy/Immunology and have completed fellowship programs in Allergy/Immunology, provide care for patients with food allergies or gastrointestinal intolerances.

We have a specialized food allergy nurse coordinator to ensure transitions to school and child care are supported, accommodations are developed and treatment of reactions are planned. A registered dietician is also available to our patients and families to help navigate meal planning to ensure food allergic children get the nutrients they need. Often a diagnosis of food allergies can put stress on patients and their families. Our skilled social workers can provide guidance and advice to cope with these new challenges.

The diagnosis of food allergy is complicated and often taxing for families. Our program addresses the many facets of food allergy. We have dedicated staff, all of whom have a personal and professional interest in food allergy care. Our mission is to provide the highest standard of care and most comprehensive services available for food allergy patients.
