This Core laboratory provides flow cytometry instrumentation
and expertise to University of Michigan investigators -- and some
investigators from private industry -- in a broad range of basic and
medical science disciplines. Samples are prepared by individual
investigators, who then deliver samples to the Core for flow analysis
or cell sorting. Operation of facility instrumentation is performed by
any of four dedicated flow cytometry operators. The Core also provides assistance in grant and publication preparation, publication-quality graphics, and development of experimental designs. |

Sample Preparation |

|
Investigators must prepare samples in their individual
laboratories. These samples are then delivered to the lab at or before
the scheduled appointment time with a completed sample form. As needed,
facility personnel can advise investigators regarding optimal sample
preparation for various applications, and can also provide copies of
procedures and/or relevant journal articles to assist in development of
techniques. Investigators unfamiliar with new techniques should consult
with the Facility Manager regarding staining protocols and necessary
control samples. First-time investigators must consult with the Facility
Manager concerning facility operating policies, and to discuss projects
pursuant to optimizing experimental design, sample preparation,
appropriate controls, and containment of potential pathogens. The facility cannot accept potentially pathogenic samples for cell sorting. If you have questions regarding viable human/primate samples or lentivirus-treated samples, please consult with the Facility Manager. Viable cells that may present a biohazard to facility personnel should be pre-fixed. If viable cell analysis is necessary, consult with the Facility Manager on containment issues before preparing samples. Samples labeled with radioactive materials are not accepted under any circumstances. |

Fees and Hours of Operation |

|
The Core operates on a fee-for service basis -- data acquisition, analysis and consultation. Operating hours are from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The recharge rate is further discounted for self-operation. Training of designated technicians will be provided, at facility rates. Currently, there is a 1-3 week lead time to schedule an appointment within the facility.
Investigators are not billed for cancellations with at least 24-hour notice. Cancellations with less than 24-hour notice are billed for the scheduled time. The Core provides one free hour of facility access to new investigators. This may be used for technical consultation and/or data acquisition, to be determined by the Facility Manager. |
