Introductory Core Operation Course

Greetings and Welcome to University of Michigan Flow Cytometry Core Facility.  My name is David Adams, and I am the Managing Director for the Flow Core. I’ve been working in and training people in flow cytometric techniques since 1992, and I am always excited by the opportunity to introduce investigators to this powerful technique.

Before you can begin operating the core's BDBiosciences FACSCalibur, you will need to complete this self-paced course. At the end of each of the eleven sections, you will be asked to complete a short exercise. The results are to be emailed to me at the above address. After reviewing your submission, you will be given access to the next section.

Each section and associated exercise should take no longer than one hour to complete. If you have questions at any time, feel free to stop by the flow lab and speak to me directly. I am also readily available by phone or email throughout the day. In addition, you may access the University of Michigan Flow Cytometry Community Discussion Board for assistance (Intranet Only).

Course Outline

Module One - Introduction to Flow Cytometry

This module covers basic flow cytometry theory by reviewing the following topics:

Module Two - University of Michigan FACSCalibur Calibration and Operation

This module is designed to cover the very basics of FACSCalibur operation. Once the module is completed, a core technician will work with you at the cytometer itself (hands-on learning). This module will cover:
