The University of Michigan Department of Family Medicine offers a faculty development program open to faculty, fellows, and senior residents in the family medicine departments and residency programs in Michigan and northwestern Ohio. It is geared specifically to the teaching, assessment, and adminstrative needs of junior faculty and future faculty in famly medicine.
The program has been in existence since 1994 and currently is configured as five one-day sessions conducted in Ann Arbor. Interested applicants must be nominated by a residency director or department chair in order to be considered for participation. This session focuses on the basic science of classroom teaching, starting with an overview of general principles of adult education and other basic educational psychology concepts. Tips for giving effective classroom presentations, including use of audiovisual equipment are also included. Small group teaching skills are also highlighted.

This session will cover the basic principles and skills associated with bedside and ambulatory teaching. Providing constructive feedback to students and residents is another emphasis of this session. Case-based discussions and role plays will be used to provide practice opportunities.

This session will address the issues of how professionals can best manage their time and the competing priorities they face, how they can leverage their time through responsible delegation to staff and colleagues and how they can effectively introduce new programs and activities into their organizations and manage the associated changes that occur.
Curriculum Development and Learner Evaluation Skills:

This session is a systematic approach to developing curricula for medical students and residents it is reviewed using a detailed workbook suitable for future applications. Basics of learner evaluation issues are also presented and discussed, including how to deal with challenging or difficult learners.

This session will address leadership opportunities for physicians, the challenges of providing leadership among peers and the options for managing the conflicts which often accompany efforts to modify physician behaviors in support of organizational programs.
