Most everyone will recognize the icon by the word Recycling, but how many people understand what it means? According to the Bay County Florida Solid Waste Management Department, it is
|
|
1. |
the separation and collection of recyclable materials, |
|
2. |
the processing and manufacturing of these materials into new products and, |
|
3. |
the purchase and use of recycled products. |
What does the UMHS recycle? How about last year's phone books, yesterday's newspaper, tomorrow's cardboard shipping box to the tune of just about 374 tons of cardboard, 300 tons of office paper, 109 tons of scrap metal, 25 tons of cooking grease, 2.7 tons of phone books. |
Plans are in the works to recycle glass and plastic bottles, as well as other recycleables. With the influx of new beds coming into UH, the old ones have to be disposed of in an acceptable manner. The reusable beds, mattresses and wheelchair replacement discards are being donated to the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries where they will be put to excellent use. |
The recycling of hazardous materials is a two-fold success. The reclamation of sometimes scarce materials as well as saving the environment is definitely a win/win situation. Successes include the recycling of flourescent light tubes and battery recycling. |
A recent Waste Disposal Update included the above information and more. |
