Frequently Asked Questions

Just how big are the hospital buildings?

All of the buildings combined, this includes off site clinical buildings,
we have just about 5 million square feet of floor space.

How much money do we spend every year on utilities?

It is in the neighborhood of very close to $13 million annually. Part of our job is to research programs that we can implement to help reduce that annual cost.

Does it really matter if I turn lights off or not?
Absolutely, YES. If 2,375 offices turn off their lights every day for a one-hour period, the UMHHC will save $50,500 per year in utility expenses. Look at California with their rolling blackouts. A few years ago they laughed at the thought of not having enough power. Can you imagine if this happened in Michigan? Everything we do to conserve energy today will definitely pay off tomorrow.
