Dr. Youngers
laboratory is within the University
of Michigan Extracorporeal Life Support Research Laboratory,
a collaborative effort between the Department of Emergency Medicine
(Dr. Younger), The Department of Surgery (Dr. Robert Bartlett, General
Surgery, Dr. Ronald Hirschl, Pediatric Surgery, and Dr. Steven Rudich,
Transplant Surgery), and the Department of Pediatrics (Dr. Gail
Annich, Pediatric Critical Care). During the year, the ECLS laboratory
hosts several residents (most often residents studying in the lab
for one or two years), visiting fellows (Japan, Germany, and Italy
being the most commonly represented), and a number of undergraduate
and medical students.
Ongoing collaborative efforts are in place with the Departments
of Pathology and Biology at the University of Michigan. Recent or
ongoing collaborators include the Departments of Emergency Medicine
at Ohio State University and at the Carolinas Medical Center, and
the Department of Microbiology at the University of Guelph, Guelph,
Ontario.
Each year,
the laboratory sponsors a variety of students, residents, and fellows
seeking laboratory experience. We have extensive experience working
with trainees at all levels, and have had the honor of working with
many individuals who will hopefully remember our lab when they are
famous (see Previous Students).
For undergraduates,
opportunities are available to work in the lab in fulfillment of
course requirements. Students interested in working in the lab for
credit need to contact Dr. Younger no later than 8 weeks prior to
the beginning of the semester to schedule an interview. Only one
student can be accommodated per semester.
Medical students
are encouraged to consider spending a summer in the laboratory as
part of the University of Michigan Summer Scholars Program. Interested
students should contact the Deans office at the Medical School
for more information regarding eligibility and application deadlines.
Residents interested
in the laboratory and any individuals inquiring about research fellowships
should contact Dr. Younger directly.
