Research Interest:

1. What is the function of the emergency department and emergency care within the US health care system? How does emergency care fit into the delivery of overall health care? What are the missions of the emergency department and how should these be prioritized?

2. What is the impact of the wider health care system on the delivery of emergency care? How does emergency care remain efficient despite the pressures placed on it from competing outside interests? How do we best manage emergency department crowding?

3. What are the dynamics underlying the decision of admission versus discharge for patients seen in emergency departments, and the economic and social costs associated with those decisions? How can observation units be utilized as a strategy and solution to inform or improve this decision making?

4. What is the implication of these decisions for acute inpatient care? What will be the nature of future hospital based care?
