The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) consists of 27
buildings spread over 82 acres. It is the largest concentration
of such facilities on a single site in the world. UMHS includes
the nation's first university hospital, one of the country's leading
medical schools, and well respected schools of public health and
nursing. The medical complex includes three hospitals with a total
of 884 beds. These facilities support training programs in almost
every conceivable specialty and sub-specialty.

Approximately half of the overall Emergency Medicine program and
slightly more than half of the emergency medicine rotations are
conducted within the University of Michigan. In 2000, a new 27,000
sq. ft. facility opened which includes new adult and pediatric Emergency
Departments, a 17-bed observation unit, and on-site CT scanner and
ultrasonography suite within the Emergency Department.
The Emergency Department includes both Adult and Children's Emergency
Services and serves as a major point of referral for critically
ill patients in south and central Michigan. The patient population
includes a high percentage of adults and children with very complicated
medical problems. Not only are these tertiary referral patients
well represented, but the recent development of an integrated University
of Michigan Health System has substantially increased the percentage
of patients with the more common types of problems treated in the
typical emergency department. The University Health System is certified
as a Level I Trauma Center for both adults and children by the American
College of Surgeons. It is the only such center in a large geographic
area and therefore receives a high volume of major trauma cases.
Staffing of the Adult Emergency Department is provided by nineteen
full time faculty who are all certified by the American
Board of Emergency Medicine. For fourteen hours each day there
is double faculty coverage, with single coverage the remaining eight
hours. The Children's Emergency Service is staffed sixteen hours
a day by seven Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty with specialized
training in pediatrics or pediatric emergency medicine.

In 1999, Emergency Medicine was recognized as an independent academic
department in the University of Michigan School of Medicine. This
designation was made with overwhelming support of the University faculty,
and reflects the development of a highly regarded residency program
as well as success in the clinical and research arenas. Dr. William
G. Barsan was appointed as the first Chair of the Department Of Emergency
Medicine.
