| It is the philosophy of this program that the
quality role models provided to residents is one of the primary
factors that will determine the quality of their training and the
success of their future careers. Consequently, this residency program
is committed to hiring faculty who are excellent clinician-teachers,
and are capable of serving as outstanding role models for residents
whether they are interested in clinical, academic, or administrative
careers. Currently there are over 75 faculty working clinically
at UMHS, SJMH, or HMC. All faculty are certified or awaiting certification
by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Faculty are evaluated
by the residents on an annual basis and these evaluations are used
to ensure that faculty maintain the program's high standards for
faculty performance.
The variety of faculty interests, activities, and experiences is
truly an outstanding feature of this program. Residents have the
opportunity to work closely with faculty who have chosen a variety
of career pathways, from those with greater emphasis on clinical
care to those with substantial involvement in clinical and basic
science research. Program faculty are also heavily involved as leaders
of local and national medical organizations, as authors and auditors
of emergency medicine textbooks and journals, as examiners and item
writers for the American Board of Emergency Medicine, an as site
surveyors for the Residency Review Committee.
