Non-Didactic Activities

Clinical Skills Assessment: required for EM1s through EM3s. A faculty member will shadow a resident during ED shifts to assess the residents' bedside clinical skills. The resident will receive immediate feedback from the faculty member shadowing them at the conclusion of each Clinical Skills Assessment.

Teaching Retreat: for EM2s - EM4s. This is a half day retreat on the basic principles and practices of teaching.

Research Retreat: Required for EM2s, all other residents and faculty are invited to attend. This half-day retreat provides an introduction to the basics of laboratory and clinical research and what opportunities are available during residency.

Annual Resident Research Forum: Attendance is open to all residents. This full day event, sponsored by St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, provides residents the opportunity to present their research projects at a local scientific meeting. In addition, it provides a forum for faculty members, residents and registrants to exchange scientific information on advances in diagnosis and medical management of patients. The forum includes poster and oral presentations.

Mock Oral Boards: required for EM2s and EM3s. EM4s are given the opportunity to participate in the annual MCEP (Michigan College of Emergency Physicians) Mock Oral Boards.

Retreats for EM4s: half-day retreats for EM4s.
Topics include:

ED Administration
Job Search, including Negotiating Contracts
Clinical Efficiency, Customer Service, Longevity in EM
Risk Management
Malpractice

Pediatric OSCEs (Observed Structured Clinical Evaluation): required for EM1s and EM3s. Eight pediatric clinical stations are designed which each resident rotates through to evaluate a variety of clinical and communication skills.

Procedure Labs (optional): organized sessions are available during intern orientation and prior to the EM2 year. This is an opportunity to practice a variety of procedures done within the emergency department arena with the assistance of faculty and senior residents. Individual sessions may be scheduled upon request.

Nada and Dr. Mikhail Difficulty Airway Course: assessment of the difficult airway with the opportunity for hands on training using a variety of equipment on an airway simulator and a selection of mannequins.

Survival Flight Training: prior to commencement of becoming a part of the Survival Flight team as an EM2 (optional) a training session is held covering flight safety and general treatment protocols.
