PARKING

Students shifting at UM – You are eligible for a blue parking permit/pass ($64.25/4 weeks) the Wednesday before your EM rotation begins. These are available through the Office of Student Programs (OSP) and are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. You will be working odd hours and we strongly encourage purchasing these permits for your safety. (The bus system does not run between 2:30am‑5:30am.). We will not be able to issue you any $2.00 parking coupons – even on orientation day.

Students shifting offsite – You are eligible for a $2.00 parking coupon when you come to UM for orientation, lectures and the final exam.  Ask Heather for these.

LOCKERS

There is a unisex ED locker-room just outside Medpath, B1 C207 UH. There are two lockers (# 363 and # 364) designated for the M4 medical students rotating through EM and PEM at UMHS. Locker combinations are given at orientation. Students are to use lockers for backpacks, coats, etc. to avoid cluttering the ED staffing area. More lockers may be available upon request. Please bring minimal items.

COMPUTER SYSTEM

The UMHS ED uses Centricity. To log on, type in your unique name. Your initial password is the month you are rotating in the ED. Please contact Heather if you have difficulty.

SJMH ED uses Powerchart.  Logons, passwords, and instructions will be distributed by Tiffany Evans (evanstim@trinity-health.org ).+  A training sessions must be completed either in person or on-line prior to starting clinical shifts.

DOCUMENTATION
Students will not complete formal patient notes during their EM rotation with the exception of those rotating at HMC where they will complete T-sheets.  They may participate in writing orders and discharge paperwork with a physician countersignature.

COMMUNICATION

During business hours, when you are not sleeping, you are expected to be available by pager.  The course administration will use email for routine communication.  You are expected to check your groupwise/Outlook account daily while on the rotation.

BLOOD AND BODY FLUID EXPOSURES

Should a student receive an exposure during this rotation, initial evaluation and any indicated treatment will be performed through employee health at the site and time of exposure.  All follow-up care will be through UMHS Employee Health.  If you have any difficulty accessing care at your clinical site, contact Dr. Hopson at pager #10598 at any time.
