Training in emergency medicine is an important part of medical
student education. The ED is playing an increasingly larger role
in the evaluation and management of illness and injury. In addition,
it provides students with an environment in which they are exposed
to a wide variety of pathology and the opportunity to assess the
undifferentiated patient.
In addition
to the UMHS ED (adult and peds), students may arrange to rotate at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor and Hurley
Medical Center in Flint. Additional rotations exist through Henry
Ford Hospital in Detroit and Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.
Students potentially interested in EM as a career are encouraged
to rotate at UMHS during periods 1-4. During these periods additional
career sessions are held to address issues such as careers in Emergency
Medicine and Residency selection.
