The patient population served by the medical center is diverse,
but underserved indigent patients constitute the majority of those
seen in the ED. Consequently the acuity is very high and there is
a substantial exposure to patient with inadequate access to medical
care and to the urban afflictions of interpersonal violence and
drug/alcohol abuse. Hurley has a very active trauma program and
is certified as a Level I Trauma center by ht e American
College of Surgeons. Pediatric patients constitute 25% of the
total population. The Emergency department is staffed by twenty-two
faculty, all of whom are certified by the American
Board of Emergency Medicine.
