Conferences

Seminars and Lectures

Emergency Medicine residents have a full selection of specialty-specific conferences each week. Conferences are for 5 hours on Wednesdays.

Orientation for Interns: A one-month "Orientation to Emergency Medicine" program is provided to all new residents in July. This program includes daily core lectures and the following:

Airway lab
Procedure lab
Ultrasound lab
EMS procedure lab
Wound care, including suturing
Splinting techniques with splinting workshop

Adult and Pediatric Core Lectures: Over 100 lectures a year. These lectures are designed to cover the full spectrum of adult and pediatric topics relevant to the practicing emergency medicine physician.

Simulation Conference: Every 6-8 weeks. Conference uses an interactive format with a wide range of simulators to cover core content areas.

Case of the week: Presented weekly by the EM4s, these sessions provide a forum for discussion of recent clinical cases felt to have significant educational value, and are presented in oral boards format to help residents prepare for the board exam.

Morbidity and Mortality: Presented monthly by the Chief Residents, this is a forum for discussion of recent cases with suboptimal outcomes with an honest analysis of changes in practice and education that will lead to improvements in patient care.

Senior Resident Lecture: One to two lectures per month given by EM3s. Lectures are an in-depth presentation on a topic relevent in Emergency Medicine.

EBM Clinical Conference: Presented monthly by EM2s. Lectures provide a forum by which the best external evidence can be presented and critically appraised in answer to specific clinical questions relevant to the practice of Emergency Medicine.

Journal Club: Monthly. Five to seven articles are prepared for each Journal Club and residents are assigned to evaluate the validity and content of the articles.

Joint Conference: Monthly. A conference is held in conjunction with another department to collaborate and gain expertise in a specialized but related area, such as Radiology, Ophthalmology, Trauma, etc.

Grand Rounds and Visiting Professors: One a month. Lectures external to the program faculty are invited to speak on research or clinical topics.

Other topics:

Air Medical Conferences: Three per year. Review Survival Flight cases and management of patients in flight, on a scene, or at another hospital.

Ultrasound: Three per year. A lab follows each lecture for practical experience.
