Salary and Benefits

Emergency Medicine residents are members of the University of Michigan House Officers Association. The House Officer's annual stipend is competitive with other training programs in the area.  In addition, the University provides health, dental and disability benefits, as well as group life and professional liability insurance.

Salary:
            PGY-1       $46,922
            PGY-2       $49,575
            PGY-3       $52,232
            PGY-4       $54,890

Salary increases occur when PGY levels are advanced in July.

Lump Sum Bonus:
Each November, residents receive a lump sum payment of 7% of their base salary.

Vacation:
Residents receive 4 weeks of paid vacation per year.

Holiday Pay:
Residents receive an additional 1/364 of their annual salary when they work one of the following holidays:  Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, or their Birthday.

Educational Materials Stipend:
Each resident is provided with an annual $250 Educational Materials Stipend.

Computer Stipend:
Each resident is provided a one-time $200 Computer Stipend to be used towards software, hardware, hand held devices, etc.

Travel to SAEM:
Each resident will have the opportunity to attend the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) national conference which is held in May or June, usually in the EM1 or EM2 year.

Additional funds are available to support resident research projects and presentation of original research at national/local conferences.

Membership:  
Memberships are provided to the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), The American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM) and the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA).

Life Support Training:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Pediatric Life Support (PALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) training is provided to all residents.

Mileage Reimbursement:
Mileage reimbursement is provided when assigned to a facility that is more than fifteen (15) miles round trip from the University.
