WAYS OF GIVING

MEDICINE AT MICHIGAN

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

For our triumphs are not in research alone, nor in the hands of a single doctor, but rather in the rewards realized from working together.

That's the Michigan Difference.

Ways of Giving
Thank you for considering donating to the University of Michigan, Department of Emergency Medicine. Your contribution is a commitment to the education of the nation's next generation of leading emergency medicine physicians.

Donation opportunities exist in support of two of the Department’s primary missions: education and research.

Education
There are three educational programs within the department: the Emergency Medicine Residency, Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship and Medical Student Programs.  Each of these programs continue to develop and grow in many different ways.

Two recent major advancements is the development and implementation of an Academic Track system for the residency and fellowship and an enhanced simulation program.  The Academic Track system is an innovative program which provides participants with a longitudinal training (a 2-year mini-fellowship) experience in either medical education, healthcare administration or research. The primary goal of this program is to better prepare graduates to assume and succeed in academic positions with a focus in medical education, healthcare administration or research at leading academic medical centers.  Participants begin to develop the knowledge base and skill set required for them to be successful as the next generation of physician leaders.  Additionally, the program allows participants to establish a network for future collaboration and might serve as a stepping stone to pursue further graduate study if they choose.

The enhancement of the simulation program has impacted all of our education programs.  We continually strive to utilize the vast technology available within the University of Michigan Simulation Center.  The capabilities are enormous and our curriculum evolves to provide more of these encounters to house staff and medical students, and potentially to our current faculty.

The University of Michigan Medical School’s curriculum has evolved to incorporate Emergency Medicine as a required 4-week rotation in the M4 year.  With this change, we are now educating and impacting 180 medical students per year!    Additionally, the Emergency Medicine Interest Group (EMIG) is one of the most active interest groups within the Medical School and touches first year through fourth year medical students.  In a team effort, the Department and EMIG host a variety of interactive skill development sessions as well as career opportunity and development forums throughout the academic year.

Your donation to the area of Education would be used to further enhance these programs and thereby aid in the academic development of our students and house officers.

Research
Through research, the Department hopes to foster the development of the next generation of emergency medicine physician scientists, and thereby advance and improve the care of our future patients.  Our Department currently supports research projects and training for all levels, including undergraduate students, medical students, residents, and fellows.  Research is ongoing in the areas of Disparities and Access to Health Care, Health Communications, Host Defenses in the Lung, Injury Treatment and Prevention, Medical Education and Training, Neurological Emergencies and Stroke Prevention and Education, Resuscitation from Trauma, and Substance Abuse.

The Department of Emergency Medicine serves as the Great Lakes Regional Node for Pediatric Emergency Medical Services Research and is the Clinical Coordinating Center for the Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials (NETT) Network.

Your donation to the area of Research would help support our efforts to train the next generation of researchers in one of medicine's youngest specialties and improve the emergency care of our future patients.

Travel Scholarships
Donations may also be made to support travel scholarships.  Attendance and presentation at national Emergency Medicine or Pediatric Emergency Medicine conferences is a valuable professional development opportunity for our residents, fellows, and medical students.   Additionally, there is opportunity to support travel for some unique off-site rotations, including our newly established international emergency medicine and rural emergency medicine electives.
