Ann Arbor combines a small-town atmosphere with
the diverse educational, cultural and recreational opportunities
of a large city. The performing arts, recreational activities on
land and water, an array of restaurants, shops, churches and social
clubs add to Ann Arbor's charm and distinction. Special events include
the Ann Arbor Art Fair, the weekly Farmer's Market, the monthly
antiques shows during the summer, the annual May Festival and the
Summer Festival.
The University itself sponsors a multitude of activities
for the entire family. Spectator sports throughout the year are
high-lighted by Big Ten teams competing in football, basketball,
baseball, hockey and many other sports. Membership in the University's
recreational sports programs are available at reasonable prices
and feature indoor sports such as squash, handball, jogging and
swimming. House Officers may play golf at one of the University's two
golf courses or at one of the city's two municipal courses. Ann
Arbor has one outdoor and two indoor tennis clubs in addition to
numerous public outdoor courts.

Throughout the academic year the University Musical Society presents
more than 40 performances of internationally-known concert artists,
symphony orchestras, chorale and chamber music ensembles, opera
and dance groups. The University School of Music also offers programs
with solo and ensemble music, together with opera, orchestra and
band performances.
Living costs in Ann Arbor are about average for
most communities of similar size and type. There are more than 700
university-owned apartments on campus. The majority of house officers
choose homes or apartments near the medical center. The Ann Arbor
school system is scholastically excellent and contributes to the
reputation enjoyed by the city as a wonderful place to raise a family.
All areas of the city are well supplied with parks and schools.

The population of Ann Arbor (2000 census) is over
114,000 and more than 64% of Ann Arborites have college degrees.
the city is located 35 miles west of Detroit and is just a 25-minute
drive from the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
