The University of Michigan Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Program is under the direction of Drs. Jonathan Haft (Director) and Gail Annich (Co-Director). The ECLS team consists of 21 specialists, a manager, an administrative assistant and an equipment technician. The team works in conjunction with the Surgical, Thoracic, Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care staff as well as the Divisions of Pediatric, Thoracic and General Surgery and the in the care of adult patients.

Adult patients undergoing extracorporeal life support are cared for in both the Surgical and Thoracic Intensive Care Units. Pediatric and Neonatal patients are taken care of in the Pediatric, Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic, and Holden Neonatal Intensive Care Units respectively, all are located at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. Approximately 90-130 patients undergo ECLS at the University of Michigan per year.

A number of research projects are ongoing in the University of Michigan Cardiopulmonary Physiology and Extracorporeal Circulation Research Laboratory and include projects such as thrombogenicity in extracorporeal circulation, perfluorocarbon liquid ventilation, implantable prosthetic lung devices, pulmonary fibrosis in acute lung injury, and the development and evaluation of devices and techniques for prolonged extracorporeal circulation.
