The University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center observed the United Nations' World Diabetes Day by sponsoring a health fair for the public. The purpose of the event was to educate
the public about diabetes treatment and prevention and to bring attention to the alarming rise in the incidence of diabetes in Michigan, the U.S., and around the world.
Almost 200 people participated in mini-workshops, attended the main lecture, and perused two rooms of displays. Several dozen staff members from the University of Michigan Health System hosted tables on various topics, and representatives from 14 diabetes medical supply and pharmaceutical companies provided the latest information for patients with diabetes types 1 and 2.
In addition, there were blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, as well as body mass index
(BMI) calculations.
