Label Reading - Type 1 Diabetes

Understanding the Nutrition Facts Label

It's important that people with diabetes (and their loved ones) learn to read nutrition labels, in order to be able to determine the grams of carbohydrates found in the food that the patient eats.

Pay attention to:

Serving Size:
There may be more than one serving in the product. Are you consuming the amount of only one serving, or more?

Carbohydrate Grams:
Some items are higher in carbohydrates than you would expect.

Dietary FIber:
Fiber is important! The more grams of fiber, the better.

Sugar Alcohols:
Be careful! Sugar alcohols can cause diarrhea and bloating.
