Adult Diabetes Education Classes

Diabetes education is the cornerstone of care for all people with diabetes. When you have diabetes, taking good care of yourself is important! You will need to learn about meal planning, carbohydrate counting, monitoring your blood sugar, exercise, medications, stress management, how to manage sick days and much more.

The University of Michigan has an award-winning Diabetes Education Program to teach adult, pediatric, adolescent, and gestational patients how to care for and manage their disease. The Diabetes Education Program is certified by the American Diabetes Association and the Michigan Department of Community Health. Our certified diabetes educators and nutritionists provide both individual counseling and group classes.

Medicare, most Medicaid programs and private insurances cover the fees for this vital service, which has been shown to significantly increase patient success in managing diabetes. Call your insurance provider to ask if diabetes education is a covered benefit. Patients from outside the U-M Health System are welcome to participate, too.
