About Us

The Brehm Center for Diabetes Research was named for Bill and Delores (Dee) Brehm, a couple whose generosity and dedication in finding a cure has led to an all-out assault on type 1 diabetes.  Their $44 million dollar gift to the University of Michigan, along with their dedication and hard work, has already catalyzed a new and different framework for type 1 diabetes research that is based on laboratory and clinical discovery and collaboration.  Dee, who has lived with type 1 diabetes since 1949, believes a cure can be found — and she and Bill believe it can be found sooner, rather than later. 

Bill and Dee Brehm have given their time and resources to the cause and today have built an inter-institutional team of scientists, clinicians, and support staff to conquer type 1 diabetes.

Our Mission

Our mission is to integrate the University of Michigan’s strength in diabetes research with its robust information technology infrastructure to accelerate the search for prevention and reversal of all form of diabetes and its complications.

Our Team

The Brehm Center for Diabetes Research has attracted an interdisciplinary group of world-renowned scientists who are leaders in their fields, working together on all aspects of diabetes. The Brehm Center is administered by a director and a program manager.

Today, exciting progress in research is underway. The Brehm Center for Diabetes Research covers a broad array of research areas, utilizing both lab and clinical studies, focused on all aspects of diabetes and its complications, to foster new collaborations within the University of Michigan and elsewhere.  Learn more about diabetes

Our Home

The Brehm Center — housed in the Brehm Tower — is a new clinical and research facility located to the west of the existing University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center Building. With eight floors, the Tower provides 230,000 gross square feet, housing expansion space for the Kellogg Eye Center and two research floors for the Brehm Center and other Brehm Center activities.
