U-M Adult Diabetes Education Classes

 

Diabetes Education is the cornerstone of care for all people with diabetes. When you have diabetes, taking good care of yourself is important! You will need to learn about meal planning, carbohydrate counting, monitoring your blood sugar, exercise, medications, stress management, how to manage sick days and much more. The diabetes education program at the University of Michigan is certified by the American Diabetes Association and the Michigan Department of Community Health. Medicare, most medicaids and private insurances reimburse for diabetes education. Call your insurance plan and ask if diabetes education is a covered benefit. Living with Diabetes (Type 2)

The Living with Diabetes Classes are designed for people with Type 2 diabetes. Four sessions of 2 ½ hour each are held each month – both in the morning and evenings. They are held at the Briarwood Center for Cardiology and Diabetes in Ann Arbor and also at Brighton Health Center . The classes are recommended for people who are newly diagnosed with diabetes and those who would like to be updated on the most current information to help with their diabetes management.

Our goal is to give you tools and suggestions that you will find useful in dealing with your diabetes. The information is tailored to what is important to you . You are encouraged to share your thoughts, concerns and questions with us during classes.

Intensive Type 1 Class

The Flexible Management Classes (or Intensive Management) are designed for people with Type 1 diabetes. Four evening sessions of 2 ½ hour each are held each month. These are recommended for people who are newly diagnosed with diabetes and those who would like to be updated on the most current information to help with their diabetes management or are interested in an insulin pump.

Our goal is to give you tools and suggestions that you will find useful in dealing with your diabetes. The information is tailored to what is important to you . You are encouraged to share your thoughts, concerns and questions with us during the classes.

These classes are a pre-requisite for those interested in pumps You will learn about what insulin pumps are, what is involved in starting a pump, how to manage emergencies and more. Once the classes are completed, the diabetes education team will work closely with you to prepare you for an insulin pump. We will coordinate the ordering and provide education and follow-up to help you become a successful “pumper”.

Gestational Diabetes

The Gestational Diabetes Class is held Tuesdays, from 9-11am in the High-Risk OB clinic on the 1 st floor of Taubman Center (Reception Area E). The classes are scheduled through the high risk OB clinic (734) 763-6295.

You will learn what gestational diabetes is, how it is diagnosed, how to treat it with meal planning and glucose monitoring. The purpose of the treatment is to keep the blood sugar near the target range to decrease risks to the baby and the mother.
