Botox® Injections

Botox®, (botulinum toxin type A) is a substance that acts to block the signal from nerves to muscles. It is injected very precisely using an ultra fine needle into several locations on the face. Botox® blocks the impulses from the nerve to some of the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines thus relaxing the targeted muscles so they do not contract, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing for normal facial movement and expression.

Botox®, may also be used to block the signal from nerves to sweat glands in patients with excessive sweat production. This generally decreases sweat production in troublesome areas such as the axillae (underarms) and palms.

Injectable Fillers (Juvederm®, Perlane®, Restylane® and Collagen)

Juvederm®, Perlane® and Restylane® are stabilized forms of hyaluronic acid used in the correction of lines, wrinkles, and folds of the facial skin. These proven non-allergenic, natural cosmetic dermal fillers are used for cosmetic purposes to restore volume and fullness to the skin, thereby improving its appearance. Injectable fillers may also be used to enhance the appearance of the lips and some types of scars.

The filler is injected through an ultra fine needle beneath the surface of the skin, under the wrinkle, where it corrects the line or wrinkle by plumping and smoothing out the skin depression. The filler acts as a natural cosmetic filler to restore volume and fullness to the skin, thereby "softening" and improving its appearance.

Also available, injections of cow- or human-derived collagen may be used in the correction of lines, wrinkles, and folds of the facial skin. Using an ultra fine needle, collagen is injected beneath the surface of the skin under the wrinkle where it corrects the line or wrinkle by plumping and smoothing out the skin depression. Collagen is used for cosmetic purposes as a "filler" substance to restore volume and fullness to the skin, thereby "softening" and improving its appearance. Collagen may also be used to enhance the appearance of the lips and some types of scars.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a technique used to minimize or remove unwanted superficial blood vessels in the skin. It involves injection of a substance that irritates the inner lining of the unwanted blood vessels stimulating a decrease in diameter of the vessels and, in many cases, ultimately results in clearance of the vessels.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a technique involving the combination of a vacuum-like suction and crystals that are sprayed on the surface of the skin. This treatment results in a very gentle resurfacing of the most superficial layer of the skin. Microdermabrasion is meant to soften and brighten the appearance of treated skin. It is generally performed as a series of treatments.

Superficial Chemical Peel (Alpha Hydroxy Acid Peel)

Superficial chemical peels using alpha hydroxy acids (usually glycolic acid) are intended to improve the appearance of the skin by causing a mild exfoliation (sloughing) of a portion of the uppermost layer of the skin. These peels are meant to soften and brighten the appearance of treated skin and, in some cases, blend skin tones and improve the texture of the skin. These peels are generally performed as a series of treatments.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment (Diode or GentleYAG® Laser)

Laser therapy removes unwanted hair, putting an end to routine shaving and waxing. Because the laser treats more than one hair at a time, it is possible to rapidly treat larger areas such as the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. Laser treatments are a safe, fast and effective alternative method for permanent hair reduction. This laser therapy requires a series of treatments to achieve maximal benefits. The type of laser utilized for your treatment and the laser settings used will be chosen to maximize the potential results and minimize the potential risks.

Laser treatment injures or destroys follicles that are in an active phase of their growth cycle at the time of the treatment. The laser energy passes through the surface of the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. During the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to heat up the hair and significantly impede the follicle's ability to re-grow. During the active growth phase, the hair has an abundance of melanin pigment, so hair in this active phase are most affected by the treatment.

Laser Removal of Tattoos and Pigmented Lesions (Q-Switched Lasers)

Q-switched lasers provide high levels of energy over very brief periods of time allowing for the reduction of many types of unwanted pigmented lesions or tattoos. During treatment, Q-switched lasers are used specifically to target and microscopically "shatter" the pigment of the tattoo ink or lesion, dispersing it in the skin to be carried away by the body's white blood cells. Such therapy requires a series of treatments for some types of pigmented lesions and for nearly all tattoos. The number of treatments required to achieve maximal benefits varies widely from patient to patient.

Laser Resurfacing / Fractionated CO2 Laser Treatment (UltraPulse Encore Total FX/Deep FX/Active FX™ Laser)

We are pleased to be able to offer our patients treatment with a new type of CO2 laser that we believe may change the way sun damaged, scarred, and wrinkled skin is treated for years to come. Combining the safety of fractionated laser therapy with the unparalleled efficacy of CO2 laser treatments, the UltraPulse Encore Total FX ™ (fractionated CO2) laser is revolutionary technology that is certain to help thousands of patients look their very best. With this device, microscopically small but deeply penetrating and highly effective CO2 laser "microbeams" ("Deep FX ™") remove old sun damaged and scarred tissue and stimulate the body to produce new, healthier collagen. In addition, most patients also elect to have the surface of their skin treated with a second laser pass designed to blend color imperfections ("Active FX ™"). The result is a significantly improved appearance of the treated skin with wrinkles and scars substantially diminished and skin color made more uniform. Patients especially appreciate the laser"s ability to safely treat both facial and neck skin, resulting in a very natural outcome. Healing after this treatment is rapid with minimal care required for just a few days and redness of the treated skin generally resolving over the subsequent week. Most patients' appearance will continue to improve for months after this unique laser therapy. Only one or two treatment sessions are generally required to achieve our patients' goals. Because of extensive research done here at the University of Michigan regarding the molecular effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser therapy, we are uniquely positioned to maximize the benefits of this treatment for our patients.

Laser Resurfacing / Ablative CO2 Laser Treatment

Laser skin resurfacing softens or removes undesired skin defects such as wrinkles or depressed scars. It also removes pigment related to sun damage thereby creating a more youthful appearance to the skin. Sometimes called "laser peeling", laser resurfacing is a precise, effective and long-lasting method of skin rejuvenation. Laser resurfacing often results in dramatic improvements to the appearance of treated skin. The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser meticulously yet gently ablates delicate tissue, layer by layer, permitting clear definition of landmarks and optimal depth control--a valuable tool for treating a range of aesthetic conditions, including lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, certain other scarring, "sun spots" and other skin irregularities. Research done here at the University of Michigan has shown that laser resurfacing treatments also stimulate the formation of new collagen to provide better support for the skin, resulting in a smoother and more even appearance to the skin. Laser resurfacing treatments are tailored to the nature and extent of skin damage, skin type and individual requirements for recovery time.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation / Fractionated Laser Resurfacing

Treatment with the Fraxel® laser is a truly revolutionary approach to improving the appearance of the skin. The laser precisely targets numerous microscopic areas of the skin using tiny focused columns of laser light. The microscopic beams of light penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin breaking down old, damaged skin and stimulating the body's own natural healing processes to produce new, healthier skin. By design, the laser targets about 20 percent of the skin's surface area during each treatment session, leaving the remaining untreated skin to help rapidly heal the treated areas. Down time is usually minimal after the treatments with redness and sometimes mild swelling generally resolving within a few days. The Fraxel® laser is safe for all skin types and may be used to improve the appearance of skin at nearly any body site including the face, neck, chest, and hands. Maximum results are generally achieved through a series of three to six treatment sessions. The skin's appearance may be quickly enhanced and continue to improve for months after the treatments. Wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage, and melasma (the "mask of pregnancy") may all be improved with this laser therapy. The result is smoother, fresher, healthier looking skin. In the Cosmetic Dermatology and Laser Center, our patients are treated with the newest, most effective version of this laser - the Fraxel® 1500.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation / Non-Ablative Laser Treatment (CoolTouch® or NLite® Laser)

Non-ablative laser therapy using either the CoolTouch®or NLite® lasers is intended to improve the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles or depressed scars. Non-ablative laser treatment uses an intense beam of light to gently stimulate the production of new collagen while bypassing the outer layer of skin. This stimulated collagen growth may improve skin tone, acne scarring and fine wrinkles. Over time the skin may gradually "rebuild" from the inside to restore a more youthful appearance and feel, as the new collagen softens the appearance of aging skin and scars.

Non-ablative (or "non-wounding") laser skin rejuvenation involves gentler laser technology that does not remove skin, and results in minimal downtime and recovery. Non-ablative laser therapy generally requires a series of treatments to achieve maximum benefits.

Photofacial (IPL(™ Treatment)

Intense pulsed light (IPL(™)) devices are used to improve the appearance of the skin by gradually reducing unwanted pigmentation and redness (vascularity) through a series of non-invasive treatments. Some patients also experience an improvement in overall skin tone and texture. IPL delivers the light energy in short, gentle, adjustable pulses that minimize bruising or other problems while targeting the unwanted skin pigment and redness.

Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment (V-Beam® Laser)

Pulsed dye lasers are used to lighten or remove unwanted or abnormal blood vessels in the skin. Pulsed dye lasers use an intense beam of light that is strongly absorbed by vascular lesions. This process minimizes the unwanted blood vessels or redness without harming the surrounding healthy skin. The laser's energy is delivered in short, adjustable pulses that may minimize the risk of bruising or other problems. The pulsed dye laser may be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including, vascular lesions such as port wine stains, hemangiomas, "spider" angiomas and facial redness from rosacea and other causes.

Erbium Laser Peel

The erbium laser provides a precise, superficial removal of the uppermost layers of the skin creating for a more uniform and bright appearance. Somewhat deeper peels may also improve the texture of the skin by softening fine lines, superficial scars, and other textural irregularities. Superficial laser peels are generally performed as a brief series of treatments with gradually increasing energy levels.
