Dr. Kang is Professor and Director of the department's Program for Clinical Research in Dermatology (PCRID) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is also Chief of Dermatology In-Patient Consultation Service at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Dr. Kang graduated with honors from Williams College (B.A.) and the University of Michigan (M.D., M.P.H.) and completed his dermatology residency and fellowship at the Harvard Medical School / Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Kang is a recipient of the Dermatology Foundation Clinical Career Development Award (1994-1997), and has received other research awards and grants from the American Dermatological Association, the National Psoriasis Foundation and the National Institutes of Health (RO-1 and K24). Internationally noted for his work in the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of photoaging, Dr. Kang's expertise extends to the therapeutic uses of retinoids in the treatment of acne and psoriasis, and the use of phototherapy in the treatment of scleroderma.
The PCRID is a comprehensive program which effectively executes clinical/translational studies funded by the department, corporate sponsors and the NIH. It incorporates a Biostatistics and Regulatory Unit, Photographic Service and Basic Science Laboratory collaboration with Dr. Gary Fisher. More than 20 staff members, including 11 clinical research faculty are part of the PCRID.
Dr. Kang directs our award-winning Dermatology Course (core curriculum) for second year medical students and Clinical Dermatology Clerkship for seniors. He is also the director of a NIH funded Predoctoral Clinical Research Training Program (Roadmap T32 or MCRiT) for medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy students.
