Dr. Olsen received a B.S. in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Oakland University (1994) and an M.D. from Wayne State University School of Medicine (2001). Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Olsen began his professional career as a Research Assistant at Oakland University while completing his undergraduate education. He completed a medical technology internship at William Beaumont Hospital and after receiving ASCP certification, remained on their staff as a Medical Technologist. He was named "Medical Technology Student of the Year" (Oakland University) in 1994.
In 1997, Dr. Olsen embarked upon a new path. He was accepted to Wayne State University School of Medicine where he received full 4-year tuition scholarship. He was also the recipient of an Honors Scholarship in 1998 and 1999 and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha in 1999.
He completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology in the Department of Pathology from 2001-2006 where he served as Assistant Chief Resident (2003-2004), and as Chief Resident (2005-2006). He completed a Dermatopathology Fellowship in the Department of Pathology from 2006-2007.
In July 2007, Dr. Olsen joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
