3rd year Goals:

The main goal of the U-M 3rd Year Dermatology Residency is to expand upon the previous two years, preparing our residents to become world-class dermatologists with a broad and deep knowledge of the specialty.

During this period you will:

  • Continue the learning process, mastering common and rare skin diseases.
  • Assume the role of mentors and teachers of junior residents, residents from other specialties and medical students.
  • Function independently and perform most surgical and cosmetic procedures.
  • Be prepared to take and pass the American Board of Dermatology Exam.

3rd year Objectives:

The U-M Department of Dermatology, in our commitment to educate our residents in all aspects of the specialty, has developed the following objectives for 3rd Year Residents. These are organized into Patient Care, Professionalism and Communication, Practice Based Learning and Systems Based Practice, and Medical Knowledge. Your performance against these parameters will be the measure your success during your 3rd Year of residency.


Patient Care:


  • Perform surgical procedures and techniques as well as understand their application and availability.
  • Have primary responsibility for active consultation under the supervision of the faculty.
  • Independently oversee the care of patients admitted for dermatologic diagnoses.
  • Supervise and teach medical residents and medical students, as well as junior residents.
  • Display compassion and kindness in the delivery of exceptional medical care customized to each individual patient regardless of race, gender, age, financial status, national origin, language (using interpreters if necessary) or sexual preference.

Professionalism and Communication:


  • Assume organizational roles, enhancing your leadership skills.
  • Take responsibility for the organization of journal reviews, Grand Rounds and regional dermatological meetings.
  • Attend national meetings and present your work.
  • Organize and manage the consultative service, including dealing with patients admitted for dermatologic disorders and patients on other services.
  • Interact with other team members, demonstrating your competency in professionalism and communications.

Practice-Based Learning and Systems-Based Practice:


  • Apply evidence-based medicine to investigate, evaluate and improve the patient care.
  • Be aware of the limits of your personal knowledge and experience, setting clear learning goals and applying new knowledge to your practice.
  • Use technology to access and manage information and to reduce error and support patient care decisions.
  • Seek help when the problem is outside your range of knowledge and experience.
  • Be attentive, compassionate and a good listener.
  • Recognize contradiction and discrepancies, separating normal from abnormal findings.
  • Identify the issues that have the greatest impact, estimating their implications, severity and extent.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the various healthcare systems and insurance programs as they relate to your advocacy for excellence in patient care.
  • Understand how your actions affect patients, other healthcare professionals and the general healthcare system, as well as how these interfaces affect your own practice of medicine.
  • Work with others in the healthcare system to improve healthcare for all patients.
  • Plan your future career path and discuss your plans with the Program Director, your mentors and the Chair of the Department.

Medical Knowledge:


  • Master the complete management of complicated dermatology cases with the ability to interface with different specialists.
  • Be able to generate a complete list of differential diagnoses.
  • Master medical and dermatological treatments of complicated patient cases with knowledge of untoward effects, cost-effectiveness, and awareness of managed care issues.
  • Master difficult histologic diagnosis, with awareness of special stains and immunohistochemistry and their interpretation.
  • Identify diseases by direct and indirect immunofluorescence results.
  • Map out flaps and complex closures.
  • Understand chemical peels, application of Botox, use of lasers, and injection of varicosities.
  • Have experience with Mohs Surgery, so you can properly advise and educate patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Be able to perform the Mohs surgery procedure under close supervision.
  • Be prepared for further training in Mohs surgery, if desired.
  • Develop the ability to counsel patients and families about all stages of melanoma using a multidisciplinary approach and comprehensive understanding of the disease and its treatments.
