Where Your Gift is Needed...

Patient Care
Depression can occur at any stage of life – particularly times of major change and stress. It often co-exists with, and can accelerate, other health conditions. Yet, mental healthcare traditionally happens in isolation of other medical disciplines and is difficult to access for those most in need.

The University of Michigan Depression Center’s strategy is to diagnose and treat depression as early as possible, when it can be most successfully treated. For this reason, patients are screened for depression in primary and specialty care settings where they are most likely to present, including:

• Family medicine practices
• Obstetrics clinics
• Geriatric clinics
• Cancer and cardiovascular centers
• College student health services and middle and secondary schools

Patients who need specialized depression treatment are seen in the Depression Center where clinicians specializing in major depressive and bipolar disorders, and related illnesses such as anxiety and substance abuse problems, are treated. This pro-active and coordinated care approach helps to detect depression early and provide the best diagnosis and treatment possible. Education & Community Outreach

Through the Center’s education and outreach programs, we provide the most current and accurate information on the diagnosis, treatment and care of depressive illnesses. By doing so, we aim to diminish the stigma often associated with depression that can prevent people from seeking the care they need.

We serve two important audiences:

• The general public, including patients, families, the media, corporate and government leaders, healthcare policy experts; and
• Academics, including students, faculty, researchers and professionals in medicine, public health, nursing, psychology and social work.

Research
The Depression Center is constantly expanding its research efforts to develop new knowledge about the origins of depression. Our collaborative approach breaks down the invisible barriers between behavioral, cognitive and neuro-scientific research.

This cross-institutional approach leads to advances in neuro-imaging, molecular genetics, microarray genetics, pharmacogenetics, brain studies, sleep and chronophysiology research, psychosocial research, neuro-endocrine and neuro-peptide research, as well as creating the bioinformatics infrastructure required to support and accelerate such investigations.

The Center’s clinical research strategy involves studies on the causes of depression, new medications, clinical outcomes and the efficacy of biological and psychosocial interventions.

Facilities and Operations
Our ability to do what we do every day relies heavily on the quality and upkeep of our facilities and on their smooth operation. While these aspects should be invisible to those visiting the Depression Center, facilities – even new ones – and their daily operation require support.
