Our strong American culture of philanthropy has influenced the writing of the U.S. tax code over the years in such a way that certain tax benefits accrue to those who make gifts to charitable institutions. A number of vehicles, such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities and lead trusts offer tax benefits and provide income during the lifetime of the benefactor and spouse or others.
