Center for Circulatory Support Services
Mechanical circulatory support therapy is now the standard of care for patients with end-stage heart failure or cardiogenic shock. U-M is internationally recognized for the treatment of advanced cardiac disorders requiring the following kinds of mechanical circulatory support:
- Ventricular assist devices (VAD)
- Extracorporeal life support (ECMO) and
- Heart transplantation.
And we’re working on the next step in cardiac care: providing the artificial heart for patients as a bridge to transplantation – or destination therapy that will sustain life without a transplant.
U-M was the first hospital in the state of Michigan to implant heart-assist devices for patients awaiting transplant. The University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center offers a large selection of heart-assist devices and treatments, depending on the patient's specific problems.
