Visitor Guidelines
University Hospital's general visiting hours are 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. If you are not able to come during these hours, talk to the floor nurse about unit-specific visiting policies.
Please keep these guidelines in mind when visiting:
- Generally, it is best not to visit hospitalized patients when you are ill.
- Patients often have special needs for food or beverages. Please check with the nurse before bringing or giving the patient extra food or beverages.
- Patient bathrooms are for use by patients only. There are public rest rooms throughout the building for visitors.
- Patient rooms can comfortably accommodate two visitors at a time. When there are several visitors, please use the patient/visitor lounges on each unit as these areas can more easily accommodate larger groups.
- Requests for overnight visits should be directed to the nurse for specific unit guidelines.
If you have questions, please call 734-936-6641.
Internet Access:
While you are a patient or visitor at UMHS facilities, you can access the Internet over our free wireless (WiFi) network using your own laptop or Internet-capable mobile device (including "smartphones"). Or, you can log on using one of the public desktop computers located at several places around our main medical campus.
Free WiFi Access (Download Wireless Internet Information PDF):
Free, public wireless internet access is available in nearly all U-M Health System facilities. This includes the main Medical Campus, including all hospitals and outpatient centers, the Cancer Center, the Cardiovascular Center and the MedInn. It's also available throughout our East Medical Campus, our various clinics at Domino's Farms, and selected U-M Health Centers in nearby communities.
Through this network, you can use your laptop or mobile device to access the Internet from patients' hospital room, waiting areas, cafeteria, and other locations. If you are a patient, we ask that you refrain from using the network while you are in an outpatient exam room, or when a member of your health care team visits your inpatient room.
The wireless network is called "guest." To access it, start up your laptop or mobile device, and enter the address of any Web site. You'll be redirected to a login page. Enter your last name and e-mail address, and click Accept. On the next page, click "Continue" and you will be directed to the Health Systems Web site. You can explore our site, or go to any other Web site by typing in the address or using your own "bookmarks" list.
Please note that WiFi connections made through the UMHS "guest" network are NOT SECURE, and that UMHS faculty and staff cannot use the network to access secure areas of the Health System's Web site. The free WiFi services does not provide access to certain inappropriate Web sites, using the web filtering software that meets industry standards.
UMHS does not provide technical support for this services, and is not responsible for computers and devices that are lost, damaged or stolen.
Public Desktop Computers:
For those without a WiFi-enabled laptop or device, free public computers are available in several waiting areas and health-education areas around the Main and East Medical Campuses.
In the Taubman Center, there are computers in the Women's Health Resource Center on level 1. In University Hospital, there are some in the waiting area for the Operating Rooms. In the Cardiovascular Center, there are computers in the Wellness Resource Center on level 2, and in the fourth floor waiting room. In the Rachel Upjohn Building on the East Medical Campus, the FRIENDS library has several free public computers. At the East Ann Arbor Health and Geriatrics Center, there are computers in the Health Education Resource Center.
For more information on computing at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, which offers built-in computers and laptop ports in every patient room, and public computers in the Family Resource Center, please visit this page.
