U-M thoracic radiologist wins international prize
Congratulations to U-M thoracic radiologist Smita Patel, M.D., for winning second prize for her abstract “Non-coronary findings on 16-row CT coronary angiography” presented at the First World Congress of Thoracic Imaging in Florence, Italy. Patel’s oral presentation was selected from among nearly 200 other scientific abstracts. Her co-authors include: Andrew Woodrow, Naama Bogot, M.D.; Kim Eagle, M.D.; Melvyn Rubenfire, M.D.; Mauro Moscucci, M.D.; and Ella A. Kazerooni, M.D. The researchers say their data show just how important it is for trained radiologists to view heart CT scans, as is done at the U-M Health System, rather than having the scans read by heart specialists alone. Preventive Cardiology team wins poster of the year
Congratulations to Katherine Rhodes, Ph.D.,
R.D.; Martha Weintraub, MPH, R.D.; Robert Brook, M.D.; Annette Kaczmarek;
and Melvyn Rubenfire,
M.D. for winning poster of the year from the Midwest Lipid Association
for their presentation of the “Impact of Nutrition Therapy as the Initial
Therapeutic Intervention in the Management of Severe Hypertriglyceridemia” at
the association’s recent conference in Chicago. The abstract, which
will be published in “The Spin,” the newsletter of the National
Lipid Association, underscores the importance of individualized nutrition
therapy by registered dietitians for initial treatment of severe
hypertriglyceridemia in a lipid clinic independent of prior diet counseling
or lipid-lowering
medication.
