D. Dan Kahn presents $1 million gift to U-M Cardiovascular Center
D. Dan Kahn, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., has thanked U-M Health
System and honored the memory of his wife, Betty, with a $1 million
gift to the Cardiovascular Center. The CVC will recognize his gift by
naming the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Patient and Family Reception Area in
the Ambulatory Care Clinic Suite of the Cardiovascular Center Building currently under construction.
Betty Kahn passed away in June 2004. Her husband made his gift
in gratitude for the care she received from Kim Eagle, M.D., the
Albion Walter Hewlett Professor of Internal Medicine and clinical director
of the Cardiovascular Center, and Scott Gitlin, M.D., associate professor
of Internal Medicine, Hematology/Oncology.
"I love U-M. I have tremendous respect for this institution and
its health system gives first class care," said Kahn.
Kahn and his family’s ties to U-M have led to other generous gifts.
Kahns’ son, Mark Kahn (BBA ’74), also of Bloomfield Hills,
endowed a U-M Medical School professorship in 2003 following the death
of his wife, Gayle Kahn (AB ’82). His $2 million gift established
the Gayle Halperin Kahn Professorship in Integrative Medicine held by
director of the program and cardiac surgeon Steven Bolling, M.D.
D. Dan Kahn is the founder of Production Tool Supply in Warren,
Mich. Recognizing the need for a more efficient way to deliver
industrial products to the local market, he started the company in 1951.
Today, Production
Tool Supply is the leading supplier of industrial tools in the
midwest and one of the Top 100 distributors in the United States.
CVC has a new associate director of development

Donated tree honors the lasting roots of CVC staff member
Lucy Larcom, a poet from the 1800s, once wrote, "He who plants
a tree, plants a hope."
If ever there was a woman who has planted hope in the hearts of
many people, it is Martha Kimball, C.S.W., A.C.S.W., B.C.D. Now,
to honor her career and impact at U-M’s Preventive Cardiology, more
than 50 staff members joined together to donate a tree that will
be planted in her name on the grounds of the new CVC.
"This is extraordinary. I’m deeply touched," says Kimball,
who recently retired as a social worker from Preventive Cardiology.
Kimball, who still works as a meditation instructor, has been a
strong advocate
for stress reduction in the lives of many heart patients.
"When Martha came here, she taught us where the heart is in a figurative
sense," says Melvyn Rubenfire, M.D., director of Preventive Cardiology.
"We wanted to create a lasting expression of our admiration and
gratitude to her," says Katherine Rhodes, Ph.D., R.D., her co-worker
who helped to spearhead the donation.
The donation of this tree, which will be planted closer to the
completion of construction and landscaping in 2007, is just one
of many gifting opportunities associated with the building of the
new CVC. For
more information on tree and bench donations, contact the CVC development office at (734) 615-3657.
