Timeline to Degree

Overview

CMB student training programs are individually developed according to the student's research program and scientific interests. CMB students take courses in the areas of genetics, cell biology and biochemistry (3 credits each), complemented by elective courses (6 credits) in their areas of interest. They also complete at least two research rotations during the first year. Further, all CMB students take a course in Research Responsibility (PIBS 501/503) which is offered every Fall term. After satisfactorily completing coursework, students are eligible to take the preliminary exam, which typically occurs in the Winter term of the second year. Once prelims are passed, students are advanced to candidacy. CMB students teach for at least one semester, usually during the first year after candidacy, and continue to engage in research to complete the PhD. Throughout, they attend and participate in the CMB student seminar every week and attend CMB short courses. A typical timeline is as follows:
