Student Seminar (CMB 850)

The CMB student seminar brings the Program together on a weekly basis, with participation by all CMB students and faculty. Seminars are held every Monday at noon during Fall, Winter and Spring terms.

The breadth of topics covered by student seminars is one of the key features that maintains the interdisciplinary nature of the CMB Program. Precandidate students typically present a critical review of one or two related reports in the current scientific literature dealing with a significant advance in molecular/cellular biology. Candidate students present seminars on their own research.

Students work with a faculty advisor to prepare and rehearse a formal seminar. The practice session includes the student’s mentor as well as a student and faculty evaluator, and is scheduled during the week prior to the scheduled seminar, allowing students to polish and improve their presentations. At the seminar, audience members, both faculty and students, are encouraged to contribute to a discussion of the presentation, moderated by a student discussant. Evaluators also discuss the presentation with the student at the end of each session to help develop and refine presentation skills.
