We all have a part to play
At the University of Michigan Health System, our goal is to promote the health of our community, our patients, their families and our faculty and staff.
Like a puzzle, each of us has a part to play in this effort.
Researchers, clinicians, patients, families and staff all must work together to educate our community of the dangers of smoking, help smokers to quit and support the Health System's goal to remain smoke-free.
That’s why we’ve decided to enhance our smoke-free environment policies - to promote and model health and wellness for patients, families and visitors, and decrease the presence of tobacco use on UMHS property.
New, expanded smoke-free policy effective Monday, Oct. 15, 2007
The outdoor smoke-free area has been expanded. It starts at the ER entrance driveway, continues along East Medical Center Drive to the AATA bus shelter, and includes the pit stairway across from the main entrance to the Taubman Center that leads to the M29 parking lot and the M29 parking lot. Those wishing to smoke need to leave the smoke-free area.
Properties owned by the UMHS are smoke-free. Maps located near exits will guide you to the smoke-free boundary and off the main medical campus.

The Health System’s smoke-free policy can be hard for anyone who smokes or uses nicotine – we know it’s not easy – but there is help.
