Intramural Grant Program Purpose

An intramural peer-reviewed competitive grant program for selected development and feasibility protocols will support several pilot projects annually. The program is intended primarily to support faculty who are seeking larger federal grants, but need seed funding to bolster their applications. The purpose is to allow the development of preliminary data sufficient to serve as the basis for independent research support through conventional granting mechanisms. Consideration will also be given to promising developmental projects deemed to have strong potential to lead to clinical studies, as well as projects which entail the development of novel vector delivery systems.

Amount of Support and Funding Limitations

It is anticipated that the majority of projects will be funded for a one year period and up to $25,000. Selected projects may be funded for up to two years, pending successful review of an annual progress report. Total funding will not exceed $50,000 and two years. Awardees are required to submit a final report upon completion of their project.

Funds may be utilized to support salaries for research assistants, supplies, and other direct costs (e.g., animals, testing services), but can not be used to support investigator or administrative salaries. Equipment should only be requested under unusual circumstances. Funding is expected to support specific projects, rather than general laboratory functions.

Application Procedures

Applications will employ an abridged PHS 398 (Rev. 4/98) format, to include:

7. Proposal summary of no more than 6 pages which describes:

a. The hypothesis and specific aims of the proposed project - 1 page
b. Background and preliminary data - 2 pages

d. Statement of significance, i.e. a clear statement of the importance of this work in terms of gene therapy translation - ½ page
e. Importance of this grant for the proposed project - ½ page
8. Evidence of current or pending approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the University Committee on Use and Care of Animals (UCUCA), where applicable, should be provided with the proposal.

Application Deadlines and Schedules

Applications due: September 1st, 2002

Applications will be reviewed once a year following the release of an RFA.   The review process generally will take about eight weeks from the time of submission of all documents.

Review Process and Criteria

Applications are peer reviewed by the Center for Gene Therapy Executive Committee, which is comprised of the leaders of the clinical and basic programs and the Director of the Center. Applications may be referred to additional internal or external reviewers as necessary. All proposals will be considered confidential and reviewers will abide by this confidentiality.

Key factors and criteria for review include: peer judgment of scientific merit and potential impact on the field; evidence of effective project design, logical aims and appropriate methodology; future direction of the proposed research, including likelihood of successful approval and funding of clinical protocol; productivity and qualifications of applicant as indicated by record of research achievement; and appropriateness of the budget.
