This study investigates the effects of phytochemical-rich diets on heart failure pathogenesis in hypertensive rats. Physiological studies include blood pressure and echocardiography and changes in cardiac stiffness. Mechanistic studies include assessments of transcription factor activity and changes in genes and proteins as affected by disease progression and phytochemical intake.

These studies examine the effect of fruit-enriched diets on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiac and renal function in the Zucker Fatty rat. Distinct phytochemical profiles enact different genomic and physiological effects. Phytochemicals have differing agonistic effects on transcription factor activity and related downstream gene and protein expression Physiological studies include blood pressure and echocardiography and changes in cardiac stiffness. Mechanistic studies include assessments of transcription factor activity and changes in genes and proteins as affected by disease progression and phytochemical intake.

Effect of Apple Intake in Cardiovascular Risk

These studies examine the effect of apple intake on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiac and renal function in the Zucker Fatty rat. The fiber-associated benefits of apples are expected to be distinct from those from phytochemicals. The cardioprotective effects of apple pectin alone versus whole apples are compared to reveal the additional effects of phytochemicals.
