Pediatric Heart Transplant
Dr. Richard Ohye,
Dr. Robert Gajarski
and Meg Zamberlan RN, MS, CPNP make up the pediatric heart transplant team at the University of Michigan.
The University of Michigan performs 6-8 pediatric heart transplants per year.
Pediatric Cardiac Assist Devices
As a bridge to transplant, we have used a variety of cardiac assist devices. Most patients requiring prolonged assist support have had the
diagnosis of cardiomyopathy/myocarditis. We have supported 10 patients with a variety of devices including the Biomedicus PVAD,
DeBakey VAD, Thoratec BiVAD, IVAD, and Abiomed. In the past 3 years, we have supported 8 patients with a survival of 70% as a bridge to transplant.
The mean age of this patient group was 10 years with a mean duration of support of 68 days to transplant.
