Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNP) are Masters-prepared nurses that function in an independent advanced practice role. Families will be followed by the same PNP for the duration of their hospital stay, providing for continuity of care. The PNP's for the pediatric cardiac surgery service work seven days a week. Some of the responsibilities of the PNP include:

  • OR consents
  • OR updates to the parents and ICU staff
  • Primary care of the surgical patients in the ICU step-down and general care unit
  • Procedures including chest tube removal, central line removal, intracardiac line removal, ordering and interpreting discharge studies (Echo, EKG and chest X-ray), are all done by the PNP
  • Two week post-discharge clinic visit if the patient lives locally
