Free throat cancer screenings offered April 17 at U-M

added 3/24/10

Ann Arbor - The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and the U-M Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery will offer free throat cancer screenings by appointment on Saturday, April 17, from 9 a.m.until 1 p.m., at the U-M Health System in Ann Arbor.

The screenings will be held in conjunction with Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, which is April 12-18, and with World Voice Day, April 16. Priority for screening appointments will be given to people with symptoms or risk factors related to throat cancer, and to those without health insurance.

"The main purpose of these free screenings is to identify individuals with previously undetected cancers, particularly people without other access to health care due to lack of insurance." says Norman D. Hogikyan, M.D., professor of otolaryngology at the U-M Medical School. "Education about tobacco use and alcohol abuse, the primary throat cancer risk factors, is another important part of this community service effort, and counseling and educational materials will be provided during the clinic."

Signs and symptoms of throat cancer may include persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, a lesion or sore area in the mouth, or a lump in the neck. Exams will be conducted by volunteer UMHS Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery health care providers and will take less than 45 minutes to complete. Refreshments will be provided, and free transportation or parking will be available.

Throat cancer can cause debilitating complications in the ability to talk, swallow, eat or breathe normally. The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher the chance is for a cure.
