Research Development

The “FRONT DOOR” to Pre-award Services at MICHR

The Research Development Core (RDC) provides no-cost services and consultation to assist investigators in designing, writing, and submitting external grant proposals. Our mission is to rapidly and efficiently translate good ideas into funded science at the University of Michigan. The RDC has both faculty and administrative leadership dedicated to accomplish this.

Services provided include linking investigators with funding sources, collaborators, and research services; guidance with study design and scientific review; advice for second round submissions; administrative and regulatory support; and budgeting.

Over the past three years faculty and staff of the MICHR Research Development Core have assisted nearly a hundred faculty and trainees to obtain over $48 million in funding. Federal grant submissions that receive RDC services have met with a 40% success rate - nearly twice the overall federal rate.

How it Works

When an investigator calls MICHR seeking guidance, typically we invite him or her to meet with our team for an hour (including those with backgrounds in project planning, biostatistics, grants administration and budgeting, human subjects, and regulatory issues as well as the NIH scientific review process) so that we can learn more about the proposed research. These meetings are intended to provide investigators with supportive advice and consultation about a proposal or research idea. We meet as a group to "workshop" the proposal, often inviting experts in relevant CTSA program areas to contribute. Meeting with MICHR introduces an investigator to the breadth of consultation, services, and resources available through MICHR and the CTSA. Alternatively our experienced staff can connect an investigator with MICHR services or CTSA faculty experts directly.
