Health Disparities Research

The University-wide Health Disparities Research Program provides a unified academic home for clinical and translational researchers to accelerate the health and healthcare disparities research agenda from bench-to-bedside, bedside-to-practice, and practice-to-policy thereby improving health and healthcare quality for Michigan and beyond.

Disparities in health and healthcare based upon race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status are remarkably consistent across a wide range of illnesses and healthcare services. There is a need for resources and infrastructure designed to increase the quality of science focusing on health disparities. As laid out in the 2002 Institute of Medicine Report, Unequal Treatment, fundamental changes are essential to improving health and healthcare quality for all.

Our first aims is to develop a collaborative network of health disparities researchers at the UM. MICHR faculty and staff from the University of Michigan Medical School, the Institute for Social Research, School of Public Health, School of Dentistry, Ross School of Business, School of Nursing, and the National Center for Institutional Diversity meet monthly to facilitate health disparities research. Participating faculty provide consultation on hypothesis generation, research policy, innovative methods for clinical research, and infrastructure needs. They also provide expertise for developing new curriculum focusing on health disparities for trainees, faculty, and staff.

MICHR’s Health Disparities Research Program (HDRP) was specifically designed to address disparities in health and healthcare by changing the current culture of clinical and translational research at UM and beyond. One way this will be accomplished is by training a cadre of new scientists who recognize the centrality of health and healthcare disparities research to high quality science.

Although closely aligned with the clinical research enterprise, the HDRP is committed to interdisciplinary science designed to reduce and eliminate disparities in health and health care.
