  • Join Us at "Hungry Planet, Healthy Schools" Symposium October 7

    MICHR and the Ann Arbor District Library will hold a community symposium to explore cultural/geographical relationships to food and the need for nutrition as a prevention to chronic disease on, Wednesday, October 7, from 7-8:30 p.m. at The Ark.

    Hear from Peter Menzel, photojournalist and co-author of Hungry Planet, What The World Eats, which describes how globalization, migration, and rising affluence are affecting the diets of communities around the globe. Following Peter's talk, Dr. Kim Eagle, Albion Walter Hewlett Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan Health System, will provide an overview of Project Healthy Schools, a program designed to teach middle school students about heart-healthy lifestyles, including the need for nutrition, with hopes of reducing their future risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

  • A New Era in Medicine Symposium - Call for Abstracts

    The A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute and the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) are calling for abstracts for their A New Era in Medicine Symposium by September 1.

    The symposium, set for Friday, October 16, 2009, will include poster session from 8-10 a.m. followed by poster awards and then presentations from distinguished speakers. The keynote address will be from Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD, and Head of the Department of Bioethics at The Clinical Center of the NIH.

  • Biggest Loser, U-M Researchers Wow Audience at Obesity Symposium


    There was a great turnout for the obesity research and weightloss symposium held at the Ann Arbor District Library July 8. The crowd enjoyed hearing from the Biggest Loser winner Pete Thomas and learning from U-M researchers Charles Burant, MD and Susan Woolford, MD on what drives successful weightloss for adults and children.   • Ideas to Innovation Symposium Led by Dr. James Geiger

    More than 70 people attended the June 9th "From Ideas to Innovation" Symposium, to learn how interdisciplinary teams create new technologies to improve health.

    The Ann Arbor District Library and the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research sponsored the event, which included an overview by Dr. James Geiger, and the 2008/09 Medical Innovation Center fellows on what it takes to develop new medical technologies.

  • MICHR Symposium Inspires Partners for Healthy Communities

    Nearly 200 people attended the May 11 Partners for Healthy Communities Symposium, to learn how researchers and community members can work together to improve health.

    The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) sponsored the event, which included an inspiring and informative keynote address from Dr. Vanessa Northington Gamble, MD, PhD, and professor of medical humanities at the George Washington University. Dr. Gamble discussed "Trust, Community Based-Participatory Research, and Health Disparities: Historical Perspectives and Personal Reflections."

    As part of MICHR's community engagement and advocacy efforts, attendees were invited from the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area as well as Detroit and Flint, including high school students from the Flint Public Schools. MICHR also plans to keep in touch with these students to keep them connected to the university and to explore their potential interest in science and related fields of study.

    After the keynote address, attendees enjoyed a "walking dinner" and interacted with researchers and their teams in a poster session where more than 40 research projects were discussed.
